Hunter Lake Tamarack Flooring - Guide To A Do-It-Yourself Installation (Page 2)

1. The starting point. After determining the starting point, mark a straight line on the construction paper using a chalk line.

4. Starting the Blind Nailing. Again using a drill, prepare 45° face nail holes in the crotch on the top of the tongue.

2. Drilling 90° hole for the first strip.

3. Fastening the first strip. Using a hammer and nail punch, nail down the first strips. Space the nails 20 to 25 cm (8-10”) apart. Spacers and wedges can be used to ensure that the first strip stays properly aligned.

5. Fastening the nail. Hammer in the nail with the claw hammer through the hole in the tongue created in Step 4.

6. Setting the nail. Countersink all nails to ensure the most uniform tongue and groove surface possible. This will make placement of the next strip easier. Use the “Blind Nailing” technique for the first 2 rows of flooring.

2. Preparing the first strip. Make sure to leave at least a 2cm (3/4") gap next to the wall to allow for expansion. The baseboard will hide this gap. Using a drill, prepare 90° holes in the first strip.

7. Rack the floor. Unpack one or two boxes of flooring and lay out the next 3 to 4 rows of strips before you start nailing with the nailer. Place the rows of flooring end to end in a staggered pattern with end joints at least 15 cm (6") apart. Find or cut pieces to fit within 1.25cm (½”) of the end wall. Watch your pattern for even distribution of long and short pieces to avoid clusters of short boards, and at the same time, you can match color and patterns. Racking the floor is crucial to minimize wastage through eliminating unnecessary trimming of longer pieces.

8. The Nailer. Using a manual or a pneumatic nailer, continue on across the floor nailing strips so that the ends are at least 15cm (6”) apart. Space the nails 20 to 25 cm (8-10”) apart along the strip. When it is not possible to use the nailer any more, use the drill, nail, and countersink method for the last few strips.

9. Correct. The diagram on the left illustrates the proper way to align ends-they should be at least 15cm (6”) apart.

10. Incorrect. The diagram on the right illustrates the wrong way to align ends-they are too close together.
